Brilliant Johannesburg colt is Guineas bound
22nd April 2007
There was no more impressive winner on Classic Trials day at Newbury than the Johannesburg colt Diamond Tycoon (3c Johannesburg-Palacoona by Last Tycoon) who ran away with a 16-runner maiden by an amazing six lengths in a fast time.
Trainer Brian Meehan is in doubt where the colt should now head - the G1 2000 Guineas at Newmarket on May 5.
"Everything of mine has been needing a run so I didn’t look on him as a good thing," admitted Meehan. "But he’s a really nice horse and we’ve got to go for the Guineas now."
Winning jockey Jamie Spencer confirmed that he will ride the Johannesburg colt at Newmarket.
A 35,000gns graduate of Tattersalls’ Breeze-Up Sale last year when offered from Paul and Sara Thorman’s Trickledown Stud, Diamond Tycoon was bred by Will Farish, Mansell Stables and Edmund Odette.
