Nine Winners for Joburg

5th May 2007

Hot on the heels of winner number eight, came winner number nine for Johannesburg, whose two year-old daughter Sandton (2f Johannesburg- Rasmiah, by Sadler’s Wells) bolted in on debut at Ballarat in the 1000 metre fillies maiden on Saturday.

Trained by Lee Freedman for a Slade Bloodstock syndicate, Sandton overcame a wide draw to win running away by close to four lengths.

Bred and offered for sale by Steve Young’s Orange Grove Thoroughbreds, Sandton was snapped up by Slade for $50,000 at the 2006 Inglis Classic Yearling Sale.

Sandton is the fifth foal of the Sadler’s Wells mare Rasmiah, a daughter of French stakes-winner Reine Maid.

With nine individual Australian winners, Johannesburg continues to hold a narrow lead over his Coolmore companion Rock of Gibraltar with eight.

Both horses will return to Coolmore Australia this spring, the former standing at $33,000 and the latter at $82,500.
