Grand Slam's sire Gone West has enjoyed a lot of success with grand-daughters of NORTHERN DANCER, especially mares by THE MINSTREL, STORM BIRD and DANZIG. As Grand Slam is out of a grand-daughter of Northern Dancer, he produces 4x3 inbreeding if mated with other grand-daughters.
Significantly, several of his Graded winners are inbred to Northern Dancer - Limehouse and Ball Four 4x3 and both Strong Hope and Grand Hombre 4x4. Grand Slam's highly promising 2007 2-y-o Laureldean Gale is out of a mare by NUREYEV. Grand Slam's Gr.1-placed son Master David is out of a mare by Nureyev's three-parts-brother SADLER'S WELLS. He is well worth trying with mares by sons of DANZIG as there are Gr.1 or Gr.2 winners by three sons of Gone West out of grand-daughters of Danzig. Grand Slam has two stakes winners and a Graded-placed performer out of daughters of STORM CAT, plus a stakes winner out of a TABASCO CAT mare. Mr. Greeley, another son of Gone West, sired the dual 2007 Gr.1 winner Saoirse Abu from a grand-daughter of Storm Cat.
Grand Slam has already sired Strong Hope from a DEPUTY MINISTER mare and the Gr.2 winner Fire Slam from a SALT LAKE mare. This suggests mares by AWESOME AGAIN, DEHERE, FRENCH DEPUTY, SILVER DEPUTY (who creates 3x4 to Mr.
Prospector) and TOUCH GOLD. A 2007 yearling out of a Silver Deputy mare made $600,000.
Many of Gone West's fast performers, including Canadian Frontier, Pembroke, Mr. Greeley, Old Tascosa, Western Larla, West Man, Dance Parade and Western Borders, are out of mares from the BOLD RULER and NEVER BEND branches of the Nasrullah male line. As Gone West is out of a Secretariat mare, some of these winners are inbred to BOLD RULER, others to NASRULLAH. Grand Slam is inbred 4x4 to Bold Ruler but could be suited by more BOLD RULER blood. Grand Slam is bred to the same pattern as Elusive Quality, who sired Smarty Jones from a mare inbred 4x4 to Bold Ruler. Grand Slam's first stakes winner, Big Score, is out of a mare by COZZENE, another Nasrullah line stallion. Grand Slam's high-priced yearlings in 2007 included several youngsters out of mares by Seattle Slew's sons CAPOTE and A.P. INDY.
TURN-TO is another name which crops up regularly in the pedigrees of Gone West's Graded Stakes winners, via such as COX'S RIDGE, DRONE and SIR IVOR.
Grand Slam's Breeders' Cup Sprint winner Cajun Beat is out of a CURE THE BLUES mare inbred 4x3 to Turn-to.
Grand Slam also represents an opportunity to inbreed to RAISE A NATIVE or MR. PROSPECTOR. Significantly, Gone West's son Mr. Greeley has two Gr.1 winners, Whywhywhy and El Corredor, inbred to Mr. Prospector, while another Gone West stallion, Elusive Quality, has a Gr.1-winning son inbred 3x4.
Grand Slam is following suit, as Limehouse and Laureldean Gale are inbred 3x3 to Mr. Prospector. Café Olympus, Big Score, Slam Bammy, Beebe Lake and Grand Hombre are inbred 4x4 to RAISE A NATIVE. This inbreeding sometimes goes hand in hand with inbreeding to NORTHERN DANCER. Strong Hope is inbred 4x3 to EL GRAN SENOR's dam Sex Appeal.
