Although Johannesburg's second dam is by MR. PROSPECTOR, his exciting first crop suggest that he is going to be very well suited by MR. PROSPECTOR line mares, in much the same manner as his sire Hennessy and grandsire Storm Cat.
As many as six of his first seven Graded winners have a second line of Mr.Prospector and the seventh, Marcavelly, has a second line of RAISE A NATIVE.
The great Mr. Prospector sired the dam of the Gr.1 winner Scat Daddy, plus the second dams of the Gr.2 winner Teuflesberg and the Gr.3 winner Rabatash.
Johannesburg's English Gr.2 winner Hamoody is out of a GULCH mare, and so is the Gr.3 winner Baroness Thatcher, who nearly won the Gr.1 Ballerina Stakes.
The FAPPIANO branch also comes into the picture, as the exciting La Traviata is out of a mare by his son UNBRIDLED. This is interesting because Johannesburg's broodmare sire Ogygian is out of a half-sister to Killaloe, the dam of FAPPIANO. One of Johannesburg's third-crop yearlings is out of a QUIET AMERICAN mare and sold for $1,000,000.
It is reasonable to expect Johannesburg to shine with mares with ALYDAR blood. Mares by ALYDAR and his sons have a striking record with Storm Cat and Hennessy, with SARATOGA SIX, the broodmare sire of Hennessy's Gr.1 winner Madcap Escapade, being just one example. Alydar's son TURKOMAN sired the second dam of Fernando Po, one of Johannesburg's early stakes winners.
Johannesburg comes from one of the most successful families of recent years - a family which traces to Monarchy, a stakes-winning full-sister to the Champion sire ROUND TABLE. His dam Myth is a half-sister to 2000 European Champion 2-y-o Minardi (a grandson of DANZIG) and to the champion 2-y-o sire Tale Of The Cat (by STORM CAT). Johannesburg's second dam Yarn is a full-sister to the Gr.1 winner Preach, who in turn is the dam of Pulpit (by A.P. INDY).
Johannesburg's pedigree allows many options, as NORTHERN DANCER and RAISE A NATIVE are back in the fifth generation of his progeny's pedigrees.
Storm Cat has numerous good winners which are inbred to NORTHERN DANCER, including the Gr.1 winners One Cool Cat, High Yield, Sophisticat, Nebraska Tornado and Good Reward. Hennessy's Graded winners Blazonry, Cactus Ridge, India, Orchard Park and Silver Tree are inbred to NORTHERN DANCER.
Johannesburg too should appreciate more NORTHERN DANCER, especially through DANZIG (sire of Boundary), DEPUTY MINISTER, NUREYEV, etc. Scat Daddy, Rabatash and Fernando Po have two lines of Northern Dancer.
Mares by A.P. INDY, the sire of Pulpit, have to be considered, especially in view of the success Storm Cat has enjoyed with mares by SEATTLE SLEW.
Hennessy's Gr.2 winner Toasted is out of a daughter of SEATTLE SONG, while the Graded winners Sunray Spirit and Mary Delaney have SEATTLE SLEW mares as their second dam. Another BOLD RULER line sire SPECTACULAR BID is the broodmare sire of his Gr.3 winner Heckle.
Two of Johannesburg's good early winners are out of mares from the HALO branch of the HAIL TO REASON male line. The stakes-winning Fernando Po is out of a daughter of SOUTHERN HALO, whereas Teuflesberg has a DEVIL'S BAG mare as his dam. DEVIL'S BAG also sired the second dam of La Traviata. Mares by SAINT BALLADO should also suit. Tale of the Cat's 2007 Gr.2 2-y-o winner Tale of Ekati is out of a mare by Halo's son SUNDAY SILENCE.
BLUSHING GROOM's son Baillamont is the broodmare sire of Storm Cat's top miler Aljabr, CRYSTAL GLITTERS is the broodmare sire of Consolidator and RAHY, another Blushing Groom horse, is the broodmare sire of the Gr.1 winners Giant's Causeway, After Market and Sophisticat.
Storm Cat has sired Tactical Cat and Cat Appeal from CARO mares and Hennessy copied his sire by producing the smart brothers Orchard Park and Silver Tree from a mare by Caro's son WITH APPROVAL.
